Copenhagen, and Is it a Hoax?
December 17th, 2009Posted in Skiing Everywhere
I wonder how many people representing the various sectors of the ski industry are in Copenhagen? Current trends in climate change certainly don’t look good for the ski industry, do they? Yeah, I know, compared to the health insurance industry, or the banking industry, the ski industry is pretty small potatoes, so when its future is threatened, its lobbying efforts are pretty anemic.
Might it not make sense for the ski industry to form some lobbying alliances with a couple of powerhouse lobbying industries, say real estate and insurance, both of which are inline to suffer losses from climate change problems? Who is going to buying the trillions of dollars of beach front homes and beach resorts as the oceans rise and flood them, and who is going to pay out trillions in insurance claims for the accompanying property damage?
I’m not a great fan of the lobbying racket and the way money has corrupted democratic governing here and abroad, but it is the system we currently have. Maybe hiring some of most successful of these characters to lobby for a good cause might actually help preserve winter and skiing- and it might keep them off the payrolls of those who want to bend the system to private advantage and the detriment of the public good.
Is it a hoax? Check out this cartoon from the New York Times. Too bad the list doesn’t include “saving winter”.
