Jackson Hole Ski Resort

With Jackson reporting only an inch of new snow this morning and Grand Targhee reporting 4″, plus another inch after 5 AM, there was little question about which side of the Tetons to ski this morning. I guess 4″ in mid-February isn’t enough to arouse the local powder pigs because Targhee was delightfully empty of [...]

Many people I know and respect have raised the question, why in times of economic distress has Grand Targhee raised the price of its basic adult lift ticket to $69? Is Targhee nuts, they ask. Doesn’t Targhee realize people are trying to save money and skiing is a silly option for their dwindling discretionary income?
I [...]

Grand Targhee’s morning snow report today informed the locals that 13″ had fallen over the past 24 hours, with 5″ of that falling overnight. Jackson Hole reported 11″-12″. That news was all it took to fill Targhee’s parking lot with skier vehicles and its lifts with eager skiers. Powder mornings on weekends don’t last long, [...]

The Tetons finally got a decent snowfall without the winds that have ruined the snow for much of the past week. Jackson and Grand Targhee both reported about a foot of fresh snow this morning. After a holiday week plagued with lift closures due to avalanches, high avalanche danger, and high winds, both resorts were [...]

The Teton Mountains welcomed in the Near Year the same way they said good bye to the old year- more high winds and driven snow. The winds were stronger on the west side of the range, so Grand Targhee had to shut down its upper mountain lifts. Luckily for Jackson skiers, the JHMR was able [...]

The most detailed account I’ve read about the avalanche that struck Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s Couloir restaurant is now online at the Jackon Hole News & Guide’s site. More ski patrollers were caught by this slide than was originally reported, but thankfully, they were only partially buried with only some minor injuries were suffered.
Yesterday, the [...]

Mother Nature is showing her crueler side this week in the Tetons. Day after day more snow arrives- usually a good thing, from a skiers perspective- but the rate at which it has fallen and the slippery icy/snowy mixture of previously fallen snow all the new snow’s massive weight rests upon, has produced a horrendously [...]

The Christmas snowstorm cycle that has brought more then five feet of snow to the Tetons over the past few days claimed its first avalanche victim yesterday. Skiing deaths are always very sad. We go up into the mountains, strap on our skis and plan only on having a good time enjoying being alive in [...]

December 25th 2008 was an interesting day in the Tetons. The Jackson Hole Mountain Resort was pummeled by snow and wind, but Grand Targhee, just a few miles away got the wind, but far less snow. An avalanche closed Teton Pass Christmas afternoon, without injurying anyone I’ve heard about. Another avalanche inbounds at Jackson, caught [...]

Yesterday, the Tetons got a breather between storms. Evan and I took advantage of the gap between storms to join the crowd of backcountry skiers on a sunny post storm morning on Teton Pass. We booted up Mount Glory to ski some nice day old powder on Glory’s west flank. The avalanche danger was posted [...]
