Two Tough Decembers for Jackson Hole

December 30th, 2009 by snowman

Remember last year at this time? The Tetons were getting pounded with heavy snows and the avalanche danger was insane. There was an inbounds avalanche fatality  at Jackson and another avalanche partially buried several of their ski patrol members and damaged an on-mountain restaurant. The danger was so high Jackson had to keep much of [...]

Snow Reports

March 23rd, 2009 by snowman

Aren’t up to the minute morning snow reports great? (Well, maybe not for some employers…) There’s nothing like the report of deep fresh snow to make getting up on a Monday morning  a lot more fun!
It is too bad that wasn’t the case this morning. I know some folks who had hopes for a decent [...]

Winter’s Back

March 6th, 2009 by snowman

This morning’s snow reports are encouraging: Jackson says they picked up 3″-5″ of snow after closing yesterday making for 6″-10″ in the past 24 hours. Grand Targhee is reporting 3″ since the lifts closed and 8″ in the past 24 hours. Further north of here, even snow starved Big Sky and Bridger have picked up [...]

The Powder Starved Turn Out

February 27th, 2009 by snowman

A fast moving weather system slammed into the Tetons yesterday afternoon dumping more than a half foot of snow- maybe more, but the high winds tossed the excess off to the Dakotas. Paying more attention to the total 24 hour accumulation figures of 7-8 inches posted on the Targhee and Jackson snow reports, than to [...]

Dribs and Drabs

February 9th, 2009 by snowman

With Jackson reporting only an inch of new snow this morning and Grand Targhee reporting 4″, plus another inch after 5 AM, there was little question about which side of the Tetons to ski this morning. I guess 4″ in mid-February isn’t enough to arouse the local powder pigs because Targhee was delightfully empty of [...]

Teton Powder Maker

December 22nd, 2008 by snowman

Mother Nature is giving the gift of more Christmas powder to the Tetons this morning. Grand Targhee is reporting 8″ in the last 24 hours with 4″ of that having fallen after the lifts closed yesterday and Jackson is reporting 10″-11″ inches of new snow in the past 24 hours.
Just for fun, since these Pacific [...]

Snow Reporting

December 18th, 2008 by snowman

Tuesday I opted to go nordic skiing. It snowed lightly all day, so I knew the Tetons would be gaining snow depth, but it wasn’t a hard snowfall in the valley so I didn’t figure I was missing many good fresh powder turns. I may have been wrong.
Grand Targhee’s Wednesday morning’s snow report said 11″ [...]
