Snow

The snow keeps falling! Just a whisker less than 500″ so far this year.
But that’s not why I’m thinking Targhee is grand at the moment. I’ve said and written things in past years that have really displeased former owners and managers at the resort, so I’m not shy about pointing out the resort’s mistakes and [...]

Maybe folks around here have already missed work too often this winter on powder mornings and are beginning to feel guilty, or the work has just piled up too deep and has to be dealt with. Whatever the reason, this morning Grand Targhee received some of the lightest snow in weeks and even with 7″ [...]

Yesterday I had to drop in to a local building supplier’s yard to get something for a project I’ve been avoiding since December’s first snows. Ten days into official Spring, everything in the yard was still covered with several inches of snow from the weekend’s storms. One of the employees there, a person I know [...]

Winter may be losing the war for seasonal supremacy, but it has sure won a couple of major battles the last couple of days in the Rockies. Colorado, Utah. Idaho, Wyoming and Montana all received replenishing snowfalls to bury last week’s sun baked spring conditions. In the Teton’s nearly three feet fell in the past [...]

Aren’t up to the minute morning snow reports great? (Well, maybe not for some employers…) There’s nothing like the report of deep fresh snow to make getting up on a Monday morning a lot more fun!
It is too bad that wasn’t the case this morning. I know some folks who had hopes for a decent [...]

On waking up this Monday morning, not to the 8-12 inches of new snow the National Weather Services folks optimmistically predicted for the Tetons, but to a mere 2″ at Grand Targhee and 3″ on Jackson’s upper mountain, one wonders about the difficulties of weather prediction in the mountains, or the variance between weekend weather [...]

The forecast, that is. The National Weather Service is predicting up to a foot of snow tonight for the Tetons. AND, up to a foot of snow tomorrow and possibly another 9″ tomorrow night.
That’s the good news. What’s the catch? Tomorrow, the temps are predicted to reach 38 degrees- in the mountains!- and winds up [...]

Powder starved skiers in at least one corner of Montana have been rejoicing lately. Bridger Bowl has picked up more than three feet of snow in the past week. That may be more than they got over the past two months!

Yesterday, I couldn’t resist the lure of a day old snowfall covering the Tetons and a bright sunny morning. I decided to do the long trudge up South Leigh Canyon to reach Beard Mountain and its gorgeous powder fields. From the parking area to the base of the mountains it’s a 2-1/2 to 3 miles [...]

This morning’s snow reports are encouraging: Jackson says they picked up 3″-5″ of snow after closing yesterday making for 6″-10″ in the past 24 hours. Grand Targhee is reporting 3″ since the lifts closed and 8″ in the past 24 hours. Further north of here, even snow starved Big Sky and Bridger have picked up [...]
