Most Expensive Season Passes

December 23rd, 2009 by snowman

I live near Jackson Hole and every year I toy with the idea of buying a season pass there, but I balk at its price tag, this year it is $1970. If I took advantage of its summer price discount I’d pay only $1675. If I skied 50 days I’d end up paying about $33 [...]

May Day! May Day!

May 1st, 2009 by snowman

It’s May 1st and there’s more fresh powder on the Tetons again this morning, even down to 6000′ in the valley there’s a dusting. If the SNOTEL measuring is to be believed it looks like there’s about 4″ of new snow in the mountains, and the sun is shining! Could be a fun morning to [...]

Powder Across the Land

April 16th, 2009 by snowman

Winter isn’t done with us yet. The powder keeps falling here in the Tetons. Yesterday the mountains received another 16″ new snow and more is predicted for today and tonight.

Snow Reporting

December 18th, 2008 by snowman

Tuesday I opted to go nordic skiing. It snowed lightly all day, so I knew the Tetons would be gaining snow depth, but it wasn’t a hard snowfall in the valley so I didn’t figure I was missing many good fresh powder turns. I may have been wrong.
Grand Targhee’s Wednesday morning’s snow report said 11″ [...]

Grim Reaper

December 16th, 2008 by snowman

We’ve all probably heard by now of the avalanche fatalities this weekend’s snowstorms made possible. Lou Dawson does a heroic job each year warning skiers to be careful, and yet, even very experienced, avalanche savy skiers like Mr. Brettman fall victim to judgment lapses every year.
Mr. Brettman perished out of bounds, but other avalanches, including [...]
