Teton Mountains

This past Saturday our great friend Suzanne took on the Mary’s Nipple Challenge the fundraiser for breast cancer and racked up an awesome 5 laps in the three hours allowed to climb and ski Mary’s Nipple, Grand Targhee’s infamously named, but famously powdery hike-to-ski peak.

It seems there are a lot of people cursing the gorgeous white snow (and rain and ice) that Mother Nature bestowed upon them yesterday. When I saw yesterday morning’s national radar image showing a wide blue band running from the Ozarks to the New York-Canada border, I was impressed by it, and thought, “How’d they [...]

The great and grand Tetons raked out another helping of powder from the skies last night and this morning’s snow reports on both sides of the range promised 5″ of new snow for those of us willing to take their word for it. We did. And, as usual, we found places where the snow was [...]

Grand Targhee’s morning snow report today informed the locals that 13″ had fallenĀ over the past 24 hours, with 5″ of that falling overnight. Jackson Hole reported 11″-12″. That news was all it took to fill Targhee’s parking lot with skier vehicles and its lifts with eager skiers. Powder mornings on weekends don’t last long, [...]

The Teton Mountains welcomed in the Near Year the same way they said good bye to the old year- more high winds and driven snow. The winds were stronger on the west side of the range, so Grand Targhee had to shut down its upper mountain lifts. Luckily for Jackson skiers, the JHMR was able [...]

Mother Nature is showing her crueler side this week in the Tetons. Day after day more snow arrives- usually a good thing, from a skiers perspective- but the rate at which it has fallen and the slippery icy/snowy mixture of previously fallen snow all the new snow’s massive weight rests upon, has produced a horrendously [...]

The Christmas snowstorm cycle that has brought more then five feet of snow to the Tetons over the past few days claimed its first avalanche victim yesterday. Skiing deaths are always very sad. We go up into the mountains, strap on our skis and plan only on having a good time enjoying being alive in [...]

Another snowstorm that wasn’t blew through the Tetons on Friday. It proved to be more wind than snow, closing Grand Targhee’s main chairlift for the day, as well as one of the main roads in and out of our valley (due to blowing and drifting snow). Both were open again the next day, when the [...]

Only 3″ fell overnight as a new storm moves into the Teton Mountains, but up to a foot of snow is predicted to fall by the time the storm exits for the Great Plains. As usual, accompanying stiff winds will create lots of horizontal snow movement, cause whiteouts and aggravate the already nasty avalanche situation. [...]
