Tomorrow?

The Jackson Hole Daily is reporting this morning that Grand Targhee is considering opening for the season tomorrow (Saturday) a week earlier than planned. According to the article Targhee is reporting a 23″ base. The forecast is for a seasonably cool, but sunny weekend, so there should be no complications on that front. While sunny weather may cause a more rapid deterioration of a shallow skiing surface, it always brings out more skiers, so that would be a plus from the resort’s point of view.  I wonder if Targhee will pull the trigger early this year?

A call to Targhee’s snow phone just now ( 7:30 a.m.) yielded two things: No news about opening tomorrow, but a weird statement saying that last year Targhee received more than 700″ of snow! Hummmm, I wonder where that number came from? Jackson Hole “inched” out Targhee last year for season snow totals when it broke the 600″ barrier and Targhee fell just short of 600″.  Is Targhee counting snow that fell after the lifts closed for the season?

Updates will follow.
