Oh Happy Day
December 23rd, 2008Posted in Skiing in the Tetons
The weather did a head fake last night and scored! Despite winds strong enough to blow tons of snow across the potato farm fields and onto the main roads leading into the Teton Valley, closing them for more than twelve hours last night; those winds miraculously swirled around Grand Targhee and left more than a foot of very light premium grade powder blanketing the resort with only very minor drifting.
Today was Targhee skiing at its best; deep snow ( waist deep in places), and few skiers- thanks to the road closures. There were lots of whoops and hollers for joy as those of us lucky enough to be there early enjoyed the light, deep snow that made turning our skis almost effortless as we scored run after run of first tracks. Definitely a powder skiers dream day!
I understand Jackson Hole had nearly as much new snow. Evan, arriving home late for Christmas, thanks to the road closures, scored a couple of runs up on Teton Pass on Mount Glory late this afternoon in deep snow. Tomorrow, in the lull between storms, and to avoid what passes for a crowd at Targhee, Evan and I’ll hit the backcountry for more untracked snow in places where the avy danger should not be a problem.
