Fun on the Flats

With the Tetons still in the grip of bright sun and high pressure, powder skiing is not an option. But why whine when the skate ski track is fast and the calm sunny weather feels like late spring in January?

We went to Alta, WY. where Teton Trails and Pathways grooms a few miles of gorgeous tracks across the gently rolling  hills at the base of the Tetons. Lots of other people had the same good idea. The snow surface was wonderfully smooth and just lightly softened by the sun, so it was nearly perfect for fast skate skiing. Zoom!

In addition to the vigorous exercise skate skiing provides, it is great for fine tuning one’s balance on skis, both fore and aft, and side to side. You also get a chance to develop a more subtle feel for the inside ski edges of your skis. All good things when the deep snows return and the alpine skiing gets wild.
