Just Another Powder Morning
January 26th, 2009Posted in Skiing in the Tetons
The great and grand Tetons raked out another helping of powder from the skies last night and this morning’s snow reports on both sides of the range promised 5″ of new snow for those of us willing to take their word for it. We did. And, as usual, we found places where the snow was deeper than the reported 5″
Being a Monday morning, Grand Targhee’s parking lot had only a spattering of cars in it when we arrived about a half hour before the lifts would open. By a few minutes before opening time, somehow a respectably long lift line had materialized. Par for the course at Targhee, it would be the only thing resembling a lift line we would see for the rest of our stay today.
Last night’s dropping mercury did it’s magic and today’s powder was the nice light stuff we expect at Targhee. It was far superior to Sunday’s offering of heavy sludge. Light snow, just a few people skiing it up, and even some sunshine; just another sweet Targhee day!
We don’t usually ride the slo-mo Blackfoot lift very much, but today we opted for a few runs out on Targhee’s northern frontier, hoping to find, and succeeding in finding, a smoother base layer under the morning’s coating of new snow. With 2000 acres to pick and chose from, and with relatively few skiers ripping lines down the hill, finding lots skiing to our liking was easy today. Life sure is tough on the west side of the Tetons.
At a little after 11 o’clock I thought a snow check up on Mary’s Nipple was in order. Amazingly, the long fall line dropping down from where everyone clicks into their skis after completing the bootpack up Mary’s was untracked when I got there. Making the first tracks on it was definitely my best run of the day.
