Dribs and Drabs

February 9th, 2009
Posted in Skiing in the Tetons

With Jackson reporting only an inch of new snow this morning and Grand Targhee reporting 4″, plus another inch after 5 AM, there was little question about which side of the Tetons to ski this morning. I guess 4″ in mid-February isn’t enough to arouse the local powder pigs because Targhee was delightfully empty of skiers. Too bad. The skiing was fun, the 4″-5″  of new snow was reasonably light and the sun even threatened from time to time. With few skiers tracking it up, it was almost like skiing back in the 1970’s when few skiers knew about Grand Targhee.  Even after 11 AM there was a huge swath of steep, north facing Ugly Medicine that was still untracked.

With snow falling only in dribs and drabs lately, the lack of a decent storms is starting to show up now as Tarhee is beginning to ski like most resorts; meaning there are finally quite a few small moguls to ski.  Even  small moguls at Targhee are  rare many years as the snow usually falls often enough to minimize them. Hopefully, things will soon return to normal and the moguls will disappear.
