What Are Sunday’s For?

Carpooling! At least at Grand Targhee that is. Just a reminder that Grand Targhee is rewarding people skiing there who arrive in a private vehicle carrying three or more people with discounts of $10 off their lift tickets and vouchers for free coffee or hot chocolate.
Now here’s an item that is sure to raise the hackles on some people who don’t go skiing on Sundays. It may pose a real quandary for some who are serious about both their carbon emissions and there dogmas.
What is the most important thing a person can do to cut their carbon emissions? Stop having babies! By way of Mother Jone’s Blue-Marble blog, a recent study reported in the Global Environmental Change journal concludes that in the U.S. each child adds about 9441 metric tons of carbon dioxide to the carbon legacy of an average female, which is 5.7 times her lifetime emissions. That’s huge. As Blue-Marble’s blogger says: “The bottom line is that absolutely nothing else you can do—driving a more fuel efficient car, driving less, installing energy-efficient windows, replacing lightbulbs, replacing refrigerators, recycling—comes even close to simply not having that child. All those good things still add up to less than 500 metric tons of CO2 savings. Not having the kid saves between 10,000 and 13,000 metric tons of CO2.”
