Winter’s Back Part 2

Posted in Skiing in the Tetons

Winter may be losing the war for seasonal supremacy, but it has sure won a couple of major battles the last couple of days in the Rockies. Colorado, Utah. Idaho, Wyoming  and Montana all received  replenishing snowfalls to bury last week’s sun baked spring conditions. In the Teton’s nearly three feet fell in the past three days. And this morning, the sun came out at about the time the ski lifts opened to make for a glorious day to destroy the powder. I have no idea how busy Jackson was today, but Targhee’s parking lots over-flowed with cars onto the old access road and there was a truly impressive  line of eager skiers waiting for the nine o’clock opening of the main lift.

It just amazes me how much skiers love skiing in the sun.  There was more fresh snow to ski on cloudy Tuesday than on sunny Wednesday, but Wednesday was when the skiers showed up in force.  Perhaps Targhee’s special “twofer” pricing today  (two lift tickets, burgers and beer for $89) was a big factor? Whatever. It was great to see so  many people out enjoying the snow. And it was fun to see so many sitting in it! It was a tad heavier than normal for Targhee and more than a few people appeared to be challenged by it.

As always in this era of fat powder skis and fast lifts, there wasn’t much untracked snow left by 11 o’clock, even on Targhee’s far

northern boundary where we found the snow had suffered less wind compaction and was almost “light”.

With cold weather hanging around for another day, skiing should be great for anyone who enjoys soft groomers.
