Winter’s Really Back, Part 3
March 31st, 2009Posted in Skiing in the Tetons
Maybe folks around here have already missed work too often this winter on powder mornings and are beginning to feel guilty, or the work has just piled up too deep and has to be dealt with. Whatever the reason, this morning Grand Targhee received some of the lightest snow in weeks and even with 7″ reported, hardly anyone was there to rip it up. Instead of crowds spilling out of both ends of the lift corral, the usual state of affairs on powder mornings, there were less than 50 people in line when the lift opened. That’s about a dozen full chairs. The snow was soft and smooth and the visibility was pretty good, even on the summit. With few people and lots snow, good, long, untracked lines persisted past well noon- how often does that happen these days? And, of course, it just kept snowing lightly to enhance the mid-winter ambiance. There sure were a lot of happy skier smiles and the question of the day was, “Can you believe nobody’s here?”
With the National Weather Service predicting snowy weather for the next few days, with cool winter temperatures to keep the snow pretty light, the skiing should continue to be awesome this week. In my book it sure beats “spring skiing” conditions.
