A Parting Shot

Today was the final day of lift served skiing anywhere near the Tetons. Grand Targhee had good size crowds all weekend with the usual big turn out for its annual Cardboard Derby on Saturday and almost as many skiers today for the final day of the season. Since Jackson closed last weekend, there were noticeably more faster and better skiers ripping up last night’s couple inches of frosting onĀ  Targhee’s season finale cake, and extra people skiing the more aggressive lines down the north face of Peaked. Ah, if only Targhee had a little more bite to its normal terrain… But if I had to chose a mountain for its steeps or for its deeps, I go for the deeper snow. I guess I already have.

A real plus to having a modest size ski area as a home hill is all the people you get to know because their faces don’t disappear in big crowds and you see them often and get to know more of them. On a sunny final day when everyone likes to show up and they aren’t camouflaged under layers of Gortex, helmets and goggles, one sees the usual suspects plus many from previous years that some how were missed all winter. It is fun to enjoy a very social day among friends in a crowd of many other very happy people.

It’s also cool to be a winner. Twice in about three minutes this afternoon my name was called as a winner of Grand Targhee Ski Team fund raiser raffle prizes!

And yes, someone finally caught me on camera skiing something other than powder. OK, I’ll admit, if pressed, that

spring snow can be fun, but for the next few months, its not what I’ll be day dreaming about.
